TRACES - Experiments in Colour by Viv Pires

Born to an English mother and a Portuguese father, Vyvien was raised in Godalming. After teaching abroad she returned here and now lives in the centre of town with her twins, Mathilde and Federico. Vyvien was educated in several countries, including the UK and Portugal, and has worked for the Portuguese section of the BBC, recording live despatches from journalists overseas, editing and selecting news items. In 1998 she wrote a thesis on The Purpose of Art in the Technological Age, and was awarded a Fine Arts Degree with honours by the Guildhall University, London. 

This exhibition was her first in the UK. "Light and colour are the first things we see when we are born. My work is an emotive response to life, the senses and experience", she says. Exhibitions are scheduled for Portugal this year and Spain in 2005.

"Treemendous"

Trees are the subjects chosen by local artist Stephen Goddard for his annual exhibition at the Museum. His decision follows a successful exhibition last year when sales were good and there was valuable feedback, which included a commission to paint murals of Blues and Soul singers in a Godalming pub.

"I have taken the bold colours I used in the murals and looked at the structures, shapes and patterns made by trees, branches and twigs", says Stephen who this year is planning to publish a book of his sketches of ships, trees, trains and figures in ink.

Stitch Variations by the Six Friends

An exhibition of mixed media and textiles by a group of seven textile artists. This group is new to Godalming Museum. The exhibition will stage a range of textiles and mixed media work - mostly framed but with some hangings and 3D items.

Work and Wealth from the River Wey

Visitors will be invited to participate when the River Wey is featured in this exhibition at the Museum. Adults will be asked to share their memories and take part in a quiz, whilst children can follow the duck trail or seek the sack of gold which, legend says, was flung into the river one Winters night.

The theme of the exhibition is prosperity, pleasure and profit, based on a collection of 19th century photographs published in Ron Heads' books 'Godalming in Old Picture Postcards', supplemented by a display of traditional 'bargeware'.

In 1620 half an hour was all the time allowed for a drinking session in Godalmings' public houses and habitual visitors to these "tippling houses" could be heavily fined. In 1876 two elephants, gifts to the Prince of Wales on his tour to India, were lodged overnight at the Angel in the High Street during their march from Portsmouth to London.

Facts like these have been revealed by local historian, John Janaway, who is staging an exhibition 'Pubs, Breweries and Bottles' at the Museum, which traces the histories of over 80 pubs and 14 breweries recorded in his latest book, 'Godalming and Farncombe Pubs and Breweries'. The book is on sale at the Museum.

Ceramics Celebrate the Year of Gardening

An exhibition of ceramics - all decorated with floral themes - will be staged at the Museum to celebrate 2004 as the Year of Gardening.

There will be over 60 pieces on show, all made between the 1880's and the early 1950's. This was a particularly fruitful time for British ceramics as artistically it coincided with the exciting use of colour during the Arts and Crafts period, followed closely by the influence of Art Nouveau and then by Art Deco.

The exhibition will illustrate the differing techniques and styles used by different pottery designers including Susie Cooper, Frederick Rhead and Clarice Cliff.

Full details, including ticketing arrangements, will be published in a brochure available in the Museum from midsummer onwards.

In addition to the opportunity to visit 'open houses' and places of worship within walking distance of the Pepperpot, it is hoped to organise coach trips to nearby places of interest.

The plans include a slide presentation by John Young based on his photographs of Farncombe; an exhibition of paintings by local artist Stephen Goddard; and at least two guided walks in the town.

Landscapes and buildings, watercolour & mixed media, by this highly skilled local artist, new to the Museum  

A full-time career as a painter is the aim of an ambitious young artist who will stage an exhibition of her work at Godalming Museum from Tuesday 20^th May to Saturday 7^th June.

Born of Italian parents resident in Farncombe for many years, she is Miriana D’Ambrosio aged 26.

 Following education at St Peter’s Comprehensive School, Merrow, Miriana studied at Godalming Sixth Form College and at Anglia University where she was awarded a BA Hons degree in graphics and Italian.  A year of this degree course was spent in Italy where Miriana studied art.

 “I am at a crossroads and looking forward to the exhibition at Godalming Museum which is renowned as a showcase for local artists” says Miriana.

Hilda Watson

A Lifetime’s Needlework

Described as a “unique collection" by the Embroiderers Guild  

Prize winning embroidery will be on show at Godalming Museum from Tuesday 6th to Saturday 17th May. It is the work of Hilda Watson of Milford, a needlewoman for more than 50 years, who died in 1991, leaving over 120 items described by the Embroiderers Guild as a “unique collection”.

Included in the exhibition - A Lifetime’s Needlework - will be a cot quilt,  joint winner of the Embroiderers Guild challenge Cup in 1955, and a bed jacket, runner up in 1954.

Also displayed will be the work of apprentices at the Royal School of Needlework, Hampton Court, who have won the annual Hilda Watson prize for silkwork offered by the school in her memory.

Mrs Watson, who taught and judged embroidery, worked on the hanging depicting women's contribution to the war effort presented to the nation by the National Federation of Women's Institutes and now in the Imperial War Museum.

"Churchill's Life Through His Paintings" 

Churchill began painting in 1915 at Hoe Farm in Hascombe during the First World War. After his death in 1965, Churchill’s paintings were catalogued by David Coombs. A new edition of this important work of reference is due to be published in 2003.

David Coombs was Assistant Editor of The Connoisseur and subsequently Editor of The Antique Collector.

What Eye See

A unique and intriguing view of Waverley through the eyes of young photographers

An exhibition staged by the Waverley Youth Project, the exhibition features the work of a dozen young people, aged from 11 to 15, who meet weekly at the Wilfred Noyce Centre.

"They have enjoyed putting the exhibition together immensely" says Anife Faria, Project Coordinator. "It has given them a sense of pride and the results are astonishing."

Graham and Vic King “Venture into the Art Market”

A young Farncombe man and his father venture into the art market staging an exhibition at the Godalming Museum .

He is Graham King, 32, who will show photographs of landscapes, flowers and buildings.  His father Vic, will display watercolours.  The photographs and paintings will be for sale.

While working for Secretts at Milford, Graham was encouraged to take up a floristry course at Merrist Wood.  He now works at Bagshot and also tutors and demonstrates for the National Association of Flower Arranging Societies.  Three years ago he bought a digital camera and so was born his interest in outdoor photography.

His father took up painting as a serious hobby three years ago inspired by the television programme Watercolour Challenge.

It was a member of the Godalming Flower Arranging Society who suggested that the Kings should stage an exhibition at the Museum.

“This is a new and exciting project for us” says Graham.
